@tjhietala even in a "shared internet connection" the notion has the same meaning, eg. "confined or restricted with or as if with a rope or chain" or "a line to which someone or something is attached", "to fasten or restrain by or as if by a tether"

I used something like "captive network service"

The meaning of "tethered" here (hard-coded dependency on a particular server/instance of a network service, if I understood correctly) seems to be quite different from the usual meaning in computing (shared internet connection). Could there perhaps be a more readily understandable term to use here?
