As a preventive operation, the administrator should regularly read the most relevant server logs. They can thus diagnose problems before they are even reported by disgruntled users. Indeed users may sometimes wait for a problem to occur repeatedly over several days before reporting it. In many cases, there are specific tools to analyze the contents of the larger log files. In particular, such utilities exist for web servers (such as <command>analog</command>, <command>awstats</command>, <command>awffull</command> for Apache), FTP servers, proxy/cache servers, firewalls, e-mail servers, DNS servers, and even for print servers. Other tools, such as <command>logcheck</command> (a software discussed in <xref linkend="security" />), scan these files in search of alerts to be dealt with.
A modo de operación preventiva, el administrador debería leer de forma regular los registros más relevantes del servidor. Así puede diagnosticar problemas antes que se informe por usuarios descontentos. Los usuarios suelen esperar que un problema ocurra repetidamente en varios días antes de informar. En muchos caso, existen herramientas específicas para analizar el contenido de archivos de registros extensos. En particular, existen para servidores web (como por ejemplo <command>analog</command>, <command>awstats</command>, <command>awffull</command> para Apache), para servidores FTP, para servidores proxy/caché, para firewalls, para servidores de correo, para servidores DNS e inclusive para servidores de impresión. Otras herramientas, como <command>logcheck</command> (un software que discutimos en el <xref linkend="security" />), escanean estos archivos para buscar alertas a tratar.
