Both tools are built on top of the same library and are thus very close, but the default behavior of <command>apt</command> has been improved for interactive use and to actually do what most users expect. The APT developers reserve the right to change the public interface of this tool to further improve it. Conversely, the public interface of <command>apt-get</command> is well defined and will not change in any backwards incompatible way. It is thus the tool that you want to use when you need to script package installation requests.
Ambas as ferramentas foram construídas sobre a mesma biblioteca e são, portanto, bastante parecidas, mas o comportamento padrão do <command>apt</command> foi melhorado para uso interativo e para fazer o que o usuário realmente espera. Os desenvolvedores do APT se reservam o direito de mudar a interface pública da ferramenta para melhorar ela. Por outro lado, a interface pública do <command>apt-get</command> é bem definida e não vai mudar em nada que quebre a retrocompatibilidade. Ela é então a ferramenta que você quer usar quando precisar fazer requisições parascripts que façam instalarção de pacotes usando scripts.

For any work with APT, the list of available packages needs to be updated; this can be done simply through <command>apt update</command>. Depending on the speed of your connection and configuration, the operation can take a while, since it involves downloading a certain number of (usually compressed) files (<filename>Packages</filename>, <filename>Sources</filename>, <filename>Translation-<replaceable>language-code</replaceable></filename>), which have gradually become bigger and bigger as Debian has developed (at least 10-16 MB of data for the <literal>main</literal> section). Of course, installing from a CD-ROM/DVD set does not require any downloading — in this case, the operation is very fast.
Para qualquer trabalho com o APT, a lista de pacotes disponíveis precisa ser atualizada; isto pode ser feito simplesmente com um <command>apt update</command>. Dependendo da velocidade de sua conexão e sua configuração, a operação pode demorar um pouco, pois ela baixa alguns arquivos (normalmente comprimidos) <filename>Packages</filename>, <filename>Sources</filename>, <filename>Translation-<replaceable>language-codecódigo-de-idioma</replaceable></filename>), que tornaram-se gradualmente cada vez maiores com o desenvolvimento do Debian (pelo menos 10-16 MB de dados para a seção <literal>main</literal>). The server can also host security updates for <emphasis role="distribution">Testing</emphasis> but this doesn't happen very often since those updates tend to reach that suite via the regular flow of updates coming from <emphasis role="distribution">Unstable</emphasis>.

Anyone can use this repository to test those updates before their official publication. The extract below uses the <literal>bullseye-proposed-updates</literal> alias which is both more explicit and more consistent since <literal>buster-proposed-updates</literal> also exists (for the <emphasis role="distribution">Oldstable</emphasis> updates):
