Instructions for translators

We have not yet documented a proper translation guideline. However, there are a few things we do, we would like you to do, too, for consistency (WIP):

  • In the German version, we use the informal "Du" to address users, but we make sure to capitalize it. If there is a way to informally address users in your language, please do so (but don’t be rude).

  • If your language as grammatical gender which signifies the gender of the addressed people, such as pronouns, articles, suffxes etc., we ask you to use gender inclusive language. We don not want to introduce very complicated language constructs nobody will understand, but if possible, choose one which will include non-binary genders as well. In German, we use the underscore character (_), to separate gendered suffixes and use the female article, where male and female articles would apply.

If you want to add a new language, there is more to be done than just translating the strings in Weblate. We tried to document it in our translation README.
