@phantom This is my final response to the string. If the developer doesn't change mind, I will stick to '尝试'. I am not convinced that '优先’ is a better and clearer choice. It is highly likely your are also not convinced.

@phantom The gist I learned from the comment is you illuminated why "优先" is better than "尝试" based on context. So , let's talk about context. The significance of context in localization, from screenshots to textual clarification from developer, is helping translators provide proper (correct, not right or suitable for some purpose or situation) translation to avoid misunderstanding of general users. In this case, I cannot see the the likelihood that the users will misunderstand the meaning of the string by substituting '优先' for '尝试'. And the wording of "better phrased" is not tenable. What you want to do is actually rephrasing the source string to "Prioritize/Prefer the use the first frame." You say it is "certainly clearer". But how about '(Attempts to) use the first frame first." Which one is clearer? Or, we can go further based on context. 'Attempts to use first frame to generate thumbnail.' Isn't that clearer? What matters more is the idea of developer, not yours or mine.
