Instructions for translators

Apps for SailfishOS

This is one of my apps and libraries for SailfishOS, a partly-open mobile operating system by Jolla.

General guidelines

If your language has different forms of politeness, prefer the most polite phrasing that still feels “normal” to you. For example, use “Sie” (instead of “du” or “Du”) for translating “you” to German. Remember these are applications, tools you use, and not your neighbourhood buddies.

Please do not forget to translate the date formats to your local format. You can find details on the available fields in the Qt documentation.

Only translate the app's name if there is a short native term for the app's name in your language. Otherwise copy the original unchanged.

Please don't hesitate to add a comment if you find any problem.

Thank you for your work!

File Browser

This is a file manager.

Use wording normally used on your system (e.g. a GNU/Linux distro) for similar applications. If you are unsure on how to translate a string, see how a similar action is called / translated in your desktop file manager. A good reference is KDE's Dolphin. You can refer to its manual which is available in many languages.

Also, if there is a (short) native term for "file manager" or "file browser" in your language, please translate the app's name.

It sounds more natural (at least in Finnish) to use expression "Swipe left" instead of "Swipe from right". Do you think it is okay to use the former expression in the Finnish translation, @ichthyosaurus?

Since user is only able to rename one bookmark at a time, should the original string be changed to "Rename bookmark"? What do you think, @ichthyosaurus?

All my Linux systems use English folder names, but I think Documents was called "Asiakirjat". "Dokumentit" would be pretty clear as well, although it could be understood as "Documentary films".

Since the Finnish language demands inflection in postpositions, I'm gonna to have think about this a little bit. I'd guess this translation should apply both internal storage and memory cards? Are there other possible options?

If you could answer my questions, @ichthyosaurus, I'd know better how to apporach this one. TIA!

I decided to drop off the "and / or" expression, since it not recommended in Finnish and "or" already contains the meaning "either or both".

Perhaps "analysoi levynkäyttöä" suits better, because it is an active form unlike "levynkäytön analysointi".
