Instructions for translators

Dear translators,

welcome and thank you for your willingness to contribute to the translation of the “learning statistics with jamovi”-text book!

There are a couple of things that I would like to ask you, in order to make your and my life a bit easier (manual corrections need time, so that what you translated won't appear until I fixed it):

[1] There are buttons underneath the “Translation” box. One of them is “Automatic suggestions” which provides you with a machine translation of the text to be translated. This can just be copied into the target field for the translation and adjusted.

[2] markdown-formattings for italics or bold - italics are enclosed with one star (*italics*), bold with two (**bold**): please ensure that the stars are placed around the same word / meaning in the translation as in the original

[3] There are a couple of text elements that should be treated different from the rest of the text (please check: the automatic suggestions might translate this “wrong”):

  • placeholders (marked by |) should not be translated: e.g., |placeholder| or |placeholder|_, among them is |continuous| which produces an icon denoting a continuous level of measurement

  • double backticks (``): they typically are used for variable or analysis names – the variable names shouldn't be changed, for the analysis names, it is up to your discretion whether to translate them or not (I decided to rather go with the English analysis since the feature to set the UI language in jamovi is fairly new, and it is relatively simple to figure out the translated name from the English one)

  • be careful that :doc:`` does not contain spaces at the beginning of the string, also ensure to leave the part enclosed by <> as it is (it points to a file; therefore, please double-check that the automatic translation did not translate it otherwise it will end up as a broken link)

  • figure references, e.g., fig12-1 in :numref:`` should not to be translated

  • (language-specific) quotation marks: there are buttons above the text field for the target translation that can be used to replace "'s by your language specific quotation marks

    [4] if there doesn't exist a good translation of a particular word or technical term, either try "translation (original word / phrase)" or "original word / phrase" (this shows the original English term in italics either with a translation that you may not be completely happy with or without a translation

    Finally, I would like to suggest that you install LanguageTool (browser add-on) as an additional check that your translations are correct (however, LanguageTool might not be available for every language).

To the left is the :doc:`spreadsheet view <Ch03_jamoviIntro_2>`, and to the right is where the results of your :doc:`statistical analyses <Ch03_jamoviIntro_3>` appear. Down the middle is a bar separating these two regions and this can be dragged to the left or the right to change their sizes.

Especially if you install many modules, your ``Analyses`` ribbon may get cluttered. You can avoid that by “hiding” modules that you don't use that often. In order to do this, go to the large ``+``, and then on ``Manage installed`` where you then can ``Hide`` modules from the ``Analyses`` ribbon. You can still access them via the large ``+``. Once you open it, a menu appears, listing all your modules and giving you access to the analyes within the module if you hover over (then the analyses are shown) or click on it (then you can access the analyes).

In syntax mode analyses continue to operate as before but now they produce R syntax. Like all results objects in jamovi, you can right click on these items (including the R syntax) and copy and paste them, for example into an R session. To import jamovi-files within an R session, you can use the function ``read_omv`` from the R-package ``jmvReadWrite`` (which can be installed using ``install.packages("jmvReadWrite")`` in an R-session. The package also contains further functions for handling jamovi-files in R (e.g., ``write_omv`` for writing jamovi-files, ``convert_omv`` for converting other file formats to a jamovi-file, or ``merge_cols_omv`` for adding columns from a second dataset while matching the two datasets by an index variable). Help how to use these functions can be obtained by preceding the function name by a ``?`` (e.g., ``?jmvReadWrite::read_omv``).

``sep``. As the name “comma separated value” indicates, the values in a row of a CSV file are usually separated by commas. This isn’t universal, however. In Europe the decimal point is typically written as ``,`` instead of ``.`` and as a consequence it would be somewhat awkward to use ``,`` as the separator. Therefore it is not unusual to use ``;`` instead of ``,`` as the separator. At other times, I’ve seen a TAB character used.

To quit jamovi, just close the program the same way you would any other program. However, what you might want to do before you quit is save your work! There are two parts to this: saving any changes to the data set, and saving the analyses that you ran. It is good practice to save any changes to the data set as a *new* data set. jamovi saves *both* the data and any analyses you have undertaken within the same jamovi file. From the main jamovi menu (``☰``) select ``Save as`` and type in a file name for your ``jamovi file (.omv)``. Remember to save the file in a location where you can find it again later. I usually create a new folder for specific data sets and analyses. Alternatively, you can ``Export`` your **data** into a format for other statistics packages (R, SPSS, SAS, Stata) or as CSV-file that you can open with virtually all programs that you may use for statistical analyses. You can, in addition, ``Export`` the **output** of your analyses as PDF, HTML or as LaTeX-document.
