DigiPaws Translation Instructions for Weblate

1. Overview

Welcome to the DigiPaws translation project! Your contributions will help make the app accessible worldwide. We’re using Weblate to manage and streamline the translation process.

1. Translation Guidelines

  1. Focus on Meaning
    • Prioritize the intent of the text over literal translation.
    • Use natural, user-friendly language that resonates with your culture.
  2. Tone & Style
    • Keep it simple, encouraging, and clear.
    • DigiPaws uses an approachable and supportive tone for all users.
  3. Placeholders
    • Do not translate or modify placeholders like %1$s, %d, or %2$f. These will dynamically insert values.

    • Place them appropriately in your language.

      Example:

    • English: You have %1$s left for screen time.

    • Hindi: आपके पास %1$s का स्क्रीन समय बचा है।

  4. Untranslatable Words
    • Do not translate:
      • App Name: DigiPaws
      • Terms like "Blocker," "Quest," or "Screen Time" (unless widely localized).
  5. Punctuation and Grammar
    • Follow your language's grammatical rules.
    • Be consistent with sentence casing and punctuation.
  6. Text Length
    • Try to keep translations close to the length of the original text to ensure they fit within the app's user interface.
  7. Avoid Comments or Notes in Strings
    • Add any translator notes or questions directly in Weblate's comment or suggestion section.

2. How to Use Weblate

  1. Select a String
    • Choose a string that requires translation.
  2. Add Your Translation
    • Translate the text while following the guidelines.
  3. Check for Placeholders
    • Ensure placeholders are correctly used and positioned.
  4. Save & Submit
    • Save your translation and submit it.
  5. Suggestions
    • If you're unsure about a translation, leave a suggestion for review.

3. Example Translation

Original (strings.xml):

<string name="welcome_message">Welcome to DigiPaws!</string>
<string name="time_remaining">You have %1$s left for screen time.</string>

Translation (Hindi):

<string name="welcome_message">DigiPaws में आपका स्वागत है!</string>
<string name="time_remaining">आपके पास %1$s का स्क्रीन समय बचा है।</string>

4 Testing and Feedback

  • Check how the translation looks in context if possible.
  • If you encounter unclear strings, leave a comment or ask for clarification on discord or telegram.

By following these instructions, you'll ensure DigiPaws provides a smooth experience across all languages. Thank you for contributing to DigiPaws! 🚀
