Soundscape app

Soundscape Android is a navigation and way finding app for people who are visually impaired. The app is free and can be installed from the Play Store. The Play Store link and more information on the app are available here:

https://scottish-tech-army.github.io/Soundscape-Android/.

Types of string

The types of strings that need translating are:

  1. Strings that will be shown on the screen UI e.g. "Menu" or "Places Nearby"

  2. Strings that are read out using Text to Speech to describe the the user location and surroundings e.g. "Approaching intersection"

  3. Strings that are read out by Talkback, the Android screen reader for people with visual impairments e.g. "mute the audio beacon". These strings usually have _hint in their name and when read out by Talkback will be preceded by "Double tap to ".

The Help and FAQ strings can contain markdown but not HTML which has been recently tidied up and removed. UTF-8 should be used for almost all characters, with only &, > and < being replaced by &, > and <. The markdown used is:

** on either side of a string that should be in bold

    * on either side of a string that should be in italic

\n\n to force a new paragraph

App description

There's a 5 minute video walking through most of the app available here https://scottish-tech-army.github.io/Soundscape-Android/documentationScreens/weblate/quick-walkthrough.mp4.

The app starts with a series of onboarding screens which allows the user to select the language they wish to use and various other initial settings. Much of the rest of the app centers around Markers and Routes. Markers are points on the map which can have a name and a description. Routes are made up of multiple Markers.

In the majority of cases, keeping the strings concise is very important. However, the Help and FAQ strings are much longer and there is more flexibility there.

We welcome any suggestions for improvements to this documentation or to the string context. Please send those to soundscapeAndroid@scottishtecharmy.support.
