MySQL kontekstā "routine" (rutīna, procedūra, apakšprogramma) ir saglabāts SQL koda bloks, kuru var izsaukt un izpildīt atkārtoti. Tā vietā, lai rakstītu vienu un to pašu vaicājumu atkal un atkal, to saglabā datubāzē kā rutīnu, procedūru, apakšprogrammu.

MySQL izšķir divu veidu rutīnas, procedūras, apakšprogrammas:
* Procedūras: Izpilda darbību sēriju. Var pieņemt ievaddatus un atgriezt vairākas vērtības vai pat veselas datu tabulas. Izsauc ar komandu CALL nosaukums().
* Funkcijas: Veic aprēķinus un obligāti atgriež tieši vienu vērtību. Tās var izmantot tieši SQL vaicājumos (piemēram, SELECT ~~mana_~~funkcija(dati) FROM tabula).

Kāpēc tās izmanto?
* Ātrdarbība: Tās tiek nokompilētas un saglabātas serverī, tāpēc tās izpildās ātrāk nekā parasti vaicājumi.
* Koda atkārtota izmantošana: Uzraksti vienreiz, izmanto jebkurā lietotnē vai vaicājumā.
* Drošība: Lietotājiem var piešķirt tiesības palaist konkrētu rutīnu, procedūru, apakšprogrammu, nedodot tiešu piekļuvi pašām datubāzes tabulām.
