If the computer is already running Windows, it is not necessary to delete the system in order to install Debian. You can have both systems at once, each installed on a separate disk or partition, and choose which to start when booting the computer. This configuration is often called “dual boot”, and the Debian installation system can set it up. This is done during the hard drive partitioning stage of installation and while setting up the bootloader (see the sidebars <xref linkend="sidebar.shrinking-partition" /> and <xref linkend="sidebar.bootloader-dual-boot" />).
Si l'ordinateur fonctionne déjà sous Windows, il n'est pas nécessaire de supprimer ce système pour installer Debian. On peut en effet disposer des deux systèmes à la fois, chacun installé sur un disque ou une partition, et choisir lequel lancer au démarrage de l'ordinateur. Cette configuration est souvent appelée <foreignphrase>dual  boot</foreignphrase> et le système d'installation de Debian peut tout à fait la mettre en place. Elle intervient lors de la phase de partitionnement du disque dur et lors de la mise en place du chargeur de démarrage (voir les encadrés <xref linkend="sidebar.shrinking-partition" /> et <xref linkend="sidebar.bootloader-dual-boot" />).

The partitioning step is traditionally difficult for new users. It is necessary to define the various portions of the disks (or “partitions”) on which the Linux filesystems and virtual memory (swap) will be stored. This task is complicated if another operating system that you want to keep is already on the machine. Indeed, you will then have to make sure that you do not alter its partitions (or that you resize them without causing damage).
L'étape du partitionnement est traditionnellement difficile pour les utilisateurs débutants. Secure Boot is a technology ensuring that you run only software validated by your operating system vendor. To accomplish its work each element of the boot sequences validates the next software component that it will execute. At the deepest level, the UEFI firmware embeds cryptographic keys provided by Microsoft to check the bootloader's signature, ensuring that it is safe to execute. Since getting a binary signed by Microsoft is a lengthy process, Debian decided to not sign GRUB directly. Instead it uses an intermediary bootloader called shim, which almost never needs to change, and whose only role is to check Debian's provided signature on GRUB and execute GRUB. To run Debian on a machine having Secure Boot enabled, the <emphasis role="pkg">shim-signed</emphasis> package must be installed.
Secure Boot est une technologie qui garantit que vous n'utilisez que des logiciels validés par le fournisseur de votre système d'exploitation. Pour accomplir son travail, chaque élément des séquences de démarrage valide le composant logiciel suivant qu'il va exécuter. Au niveau le plus profond, le microprogramme<foreignphrase>firmware</foreignphrase> UEFI intègre des clés cryptographiques fournies par Microsoft pour vérifier la signature du chargeur d'amorçage, garantissant ainsi la sécurité de son exécution. These screens have several areas that may “have focus” (text entry area, checkboxes, list of choices, <guibutton>OK</guibutton> and <guibutton>Cancel</guibutton> buttons), and the <keycap>TAB</keycap> key allows you to move from one to another.

You must first identify the device name of the USB key (ex: <literal>/dev/sdb</literal>); the simplest means to do this is to check the messages issued by the kernel using the <command>dmesg</command> command. Then you must copy the previously downloaded ISO image (for example, debian-11.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso) with the command <command>cat debian-11.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso &gt;/dev/sdb; sync</command>. This command requires administrator rights, since it accesses the USB key directly and blindly erases its content.
Il faut tout d'abord identifier le nom de périphérique de la clé USB (ex : <literal>/dev/sdb</literal>). Le plus simple pour cela est de consulter les messages émis par le noyau à l'aide de la commande <command>dmesg</command>. Ensuite, il faut copier l'image ISO préalablement récupérée (par exemple <filename>debian-11.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso</filename>) avec la commande <command>cat debian-11.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso &gt;/dev/sdb; sync</command>. Cette commande requiert les droits administrateurs car elle accède directement à la clé USB et écrase aveuglément son contenu.
