Documentation for each package is stored in <filename>/usr/share/doc/<replaceable>package</replaceable>/</filename>. This directory often contains a <filename>README.Debian</filename> file describing the Debian specific adjustments made by the package maintainer. It is, thus, wise to read this file prior to any configuration, in order to benefit from their experience. We also find a <filename>changelog.Debian.gz</filename> file describing the changes made from one version to the next by the Debian maintainer. This is not to be confused with the <filename>changelog.gz</filename> file (or equivalent), which describes the changes made by the upstream developers. The <filename>copyright</filename> file includes information about the authors and the license covering the software. Finally, we may also find a file named <filename>NEWS.Debian.gz</filename>, which allows the Debian developer to communicate important information regarding updates; if <emphasis role="pkg">apt-listchanges</emphasis> is installed, then these messages are automatically displayed. All other files are specific to the software in question. We especially would like to point out the <filename>examples</filename> sub-directory, which frequently contains examples of configuration files.

Ce répertoire contient souvent un fichier <filename>README.Debian</filename> décrivant les aménagements spécifiques à Debian réalisés par le responsable du paquet. Il est donc sage de lire ce fichier avant toute configuration, pour tirer profit de son expérience. Long Term Support is a difficult commitment to make in Debian because volunteers tend to avoid the work that is not very fun. And providing security support for 5 year old software is — for many contributors — a lot less fun than packaging new upstream versions or developing new features.
Le support à long terme est une lourde responsabilité, parce que les volontaires ont tendance à éviter le travail perçu comme non enthousiasmant. The Debian security team handles security support in the current <emphasis role="distribution">Stable</emphasis> release and also in the <emphasis role="distribution">Oldstable</emphasis> release (but only for as long as is needed to ensure one year of overlap with the current stable release). This amounts roughly to three years of support for each release. The Debian LTS team handles the last (two) years of security support so that each release benefits from at least 5 years of support and so that users can upgrade from version N to N+2, for example, from Debian 9 <emphasis role="distribution">Stretch</emphasis> to Debian 11 <emphasis role="distribution">Bullseye</emphasis>. <ulink type="block" url="https://wiki.debian.org/LTS" />
L'équipe de sécurité de Debian s'occupe du support de sécurité de la version actuellement <emphasis role="distribution">Stable</emphasis> ; elle s'occupe aussi de <emphasis role="distribution">Oldstable</emphasis>, mais seulement pendant la durée nécessaire pour assurer qu'il y a au moins un an de chevauchement avec la version actuellement stable.
