Instructions for translators

Thank you for the time contributing to this project! Here are some instructions and guidelines:

  • Language should be simple but correct. This means that wording shouldn't make it difficult to use the application, but it is also important to use the correct technical terms.
  • "Cartero" is the name of the application and thus it is not translated. Maybe how this word is pronounced on other languages is something that hasn't been well thought yet.
  • Every language is welcome here.

Announcement posted

In the last couple of weeks I've seen an increased amount of out of sync issues between GitHub and Weblate.

It seems that Weblate was not receiving properly the new changes pushed to the repository in GitHub, so when translations are made in the website by contributors, they target an outdated version of the repository, if there have been also recent changes to the .po files in GitHub made by me via a push.

When a change to a translation file is made at the same time both here and in GitHub, then Weblate has a conflict because it is not possible to know which version of the file is the real one. The behaviour of Weblate is to lock the contributions to the project until a maintainer manually fixes the issue. Just to be clear: locking the contributions is good because the less changes are made to the strings in Weblate during a conflict, the safer it is to fix the issue without losing strings. If anyone could provide strings during a conflict, eventually I'd accidentally make a mistake and lose contributions, wasting valuable time from the translators who are helping the project speak more languages.

Unfortunately, Weblate does not notify when this happens and I usually discover this issue manually when I browse the project page. If you find that the project is locked for maintenance, please open an issue in the GitHub repository. I don't have reasons to lock the project at the moment, so if it's locked, it's because it's out of sync.

Said so, I've changed the process to try to minimize this issue in the future.

  • I've re-installed the Weblate app in the GitHub repository and I've verified that as of 2025-08-05, 16:00 UTC, pushing to the GitHub repository causes Weblate to sync again.

  • I've also reduced the amount of hours that Weblate waits to make a commit with your contributed strings from 24 to 1. I believe that if Weblate commits and pushes more often the changes made via the website, this will reduce the chances of a conflict happening because the time window at which two changes could be made to the .po files in both websites also decreases.

I'll continue to monitor the situation in the upcoming weeks to see if things improve after these changes.

Sorry for the inconveniences so far, and thank you for helping translate this project.
